How was your approach with clay?
I approach the use of clay with a very open mind. I had no idea what to expect or what was expected of me.
The work you produced at Museo Carlo Zauli in Faenza, could you tell me something about their genesis?
The ideas that shaped my work in Faenza all came from different places.
Claymation is a copy of the dustbin that sat in the corner of my first pottery class at school.
The damp situation within the bin was used to reanimate dried clay... it was used to give clay another life. The idea of for the vase started with the thought that all clay must be manipulated by hand – Flowers Arranged By Hands – the internal and hidden shape within the vase are a negative of my left and right hand. The long stemmed flowers are forced to lean in the direction my fingers dictate.
The Cut Out (folded/fired) pieces came to me as I understood that the land around Faenza is known as a fruit growing region – but also those hills are full of clay. The boxes were made from the clay that supports the soil that helps the kiwi plants produce their fruit.
Do you think the you will use clay in the future?
