Tabita Rezaire is cool AF. She loves mangos, ass meditation and photobooth. She’s Caribbean/Scandinavian and is awaiting her DNA test result. She’s trying to take care of her self and the people around her; she’s some sort of a health practitioner.

She’s concerned about the state of the world, so does what she can with what she has to bring some healing frequencies out there. She makes artwork for a living but doesn’t live of it yet. She’s also a Kemetic yoga teacher and tries to channel Sekmet, Kemet’s healer warrior Neteru. She spends way too much time online and some people have called her a Cyber Warrior, though she’s trying to sort herself out to become a Peaceful warrior. She has shown her work for free at some fancy international places.

She also works asMalaxa with Alicia Mersy and as NTU with light workers Bogosi Sekhukhuni and Nolan Oswald Dennis. She loves her tribe 4real 4ever.

The market or your need to express?

The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive, what may be is the consistency within your discourse or work? What does it means to confront or challenge an industry you benefit from / or want to be acknowledged by?  I’m still trying to figure out…

Lightness or depth?

Use the first to tell the second

Could you briefly describe one of your latest works?

I’m working on a video installation Sugar Walls Teardom. It’s about the role of Black womxn’s vagina in the advancement of science and technology. I’m looking at medical plantation during slavery, the history of genecology, Hela immortal cells, forced sterilisation, pharmaceuticals testing, and all sorts of biological warfare against our wombs

What's on your desk right now

Empty cups of teas, notebooks, books, papers, pear cores, a fluffy pencil case, my phone, my Internet dangle, sound speakers, editing screens, a printer that doesn’t print, cables that connect all of this and a bamboo

The image of your desktop

Skyforgod - by the woman of my life.

What are you reading?

I just got Dark Space: Architecture, Representation, Black identity by Mario Gooden as he was in Joburg a few days ago to launch his book

 A Movie?

The portrait of Jason by Shirley Clarke. How far have we really gone?

Where would you like to live?

By the sea

Do you have reference artists? Artists you’d like to work with?

I’m fan girling every single day! Im surrounded (offline and online) by so many inspiring people that I would love to work with, but already working with my favs S/O to Malaxa and NTU.

A project, related to art, that you’d like to do?

I’m starting a space for art/health/clubbing with an online network as well, really looking forward to get that going. Was gonna call it Onyx (a black healing stone) but a party with that name just started here! So waiting for a new name to manifest!

If you weren’t an artist, what job would you like?

I can still do all the other jobs I ve ever wanted even as an artist: I can still be a teacher, a doctor, a mother, a striper, a herbalist, a lover, a writer, a dancer, a yogi, a filmmaker, a fashion designer…
