Who is Siliqoon?
Siliqoon is a Milan based art label and a creative consulting agency founded by Andrea Magnani and Zoe De Luca. We deal with art direction, trend forecasting, design and curatorship with a systemic long-term approach. Through various projects, like the residency program ‘Labs‘ or the thematic digital publication Qway, we support the artists in research, design and production of new artworks.
How did it begin?
Andrea: The main core of Siliqoon is the residency program; it is also the first one I thought about, because in my practice I always found that experiences such as meeting fabricators or learning about new materials and processes are really inspiring moments were an artist - or a person in general - can grow and comes out with new ideas.
Zoe: On my side, I’m interested in the idea of gathering different disciplines, to challenge the curatorial approach in being as much open and intersectional as possible. Contamination is one of the best way to encourage new artistic practices.
Siliqoon in five words…
Like a spinning tender circle. Your work in five words…
Creating conditions for innovative practices. Can you tell me about Qway?
Qway represents our theoretical branch of activities. It's an online publication devoted to understand our times with a focus on the relationship between art and global trend forecasting. Every issue is monothematic and includes contributions by different creatives and intellectuals. The first issue was dedicated to the topic of Planetcare and featured artworks by Iain Ball, research material of different artists, scientists, designers, landscape architects, ecologist philosophers, environmental activists and goa gurus. The second issue will be dedicated to the glimmer gate between two diverging waves and it will be launched the May 3rd with a special event at Marsèlleria new exhibition space in New York.
Could you describe one of your latest project?
In March we presented a two person show with works by Antoine Renard and Libby Rothfeld at Marsèlleria (Milan); the exhibition is the outcome of our second Lab residency that took place in Bologna from the 19th to the 30th of September 2016.
How would you describe your design?
Spinning, transparent, organic, iridescent, innovative.
Five artists or designers that have marked yourself:
Zoe: Richard Buckminster Fuller, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Olafur Eliasson, Ugo La Pietra, Anicka Yi.
Andrea: Andrea Branzi, Luciano Fabro, Antoni Gaudí, Philippe Parreno and all the artists and designers that I collaborate with.
Five design object:
Unsinkable ant rafts, Galilean telescope, Sagrada Família, cable ties and christmas decorations.
I believe that an object has a soul and that can tell a story. What is an object for you?
Like the Shiva stones called Linga-Yoni, which represents the fusion of female and male sexes and the endless workings of creation and renewal, an object may have the power to enhance and balance energy, acting as a passion catalyst and talisman.
